On the morning of 29 July 1979, the political-military faction of the terrorist organisation ETA sowed panic among the population of Madrid with a series of attacks at Barajas Airport and Chamartín and Atocha rail stations, killing seven people and wounding nearly a hundred others.

At 1.15 pm, barely fifteen minutes after the first bomb exploded in Barajas, and five minutes after the second explosion in Chamartín, a third bomb went off in a suitcase in the left luggage office at Atocha station. As a result, four people were killed and another forty were wounded. One of those killed was Jesús Emilio Pérez, who was admitted with grave injuries to the victims Primero de Octubre Hospital, where he died in the early morning of the following day.
