Mario González Blasco, a worker at the Agruminsa company in Vizcaya, was kidnapped and murdered by ETA in the town of Éibar, Gipuzkoa on 2 August 1980. The kidnapping took place shortly after 6 am, when Mario finished his shift as a welder in a mine. He was on his way home when a number of hooded ETA terrorists intercepted his car and kidnapped him.
Around three o’clock that afternoon, several calls were made to media outlets in the name of ETA politico-militar, claiming responsibility for the kidnapping and killing of Mario González and alleging that he had links to the Batallón Vasco Español (Spanish Basque Battalion). The terrorists abandoned his body on the outskirts of the town of Éibar.
Employees at the company where the victim worked agreed to hold a 24-hour work stoppage as a sign of mourning for the killing of their colleague.
