An ETA unit planted a limpet bomb under the old pickup truck Ignacio Bañuelos Lasso used to trade scrap metal. Ignacio was struck by the full force of the blast. He lost control of the vehicle which crashed into the front of a former discotheque. His remains were trapped inside the cab, the left leg almost entirely severed from the rest of the body.
This was not ETA’s first attack on the Bañuelos family; a year earlier, on 7 October 1988, Ignacio’s cousin, Ramon Bañuelos, had been killed in the same way. In January 1991, two other members of the family, María García Bañuelos and her eleven-year old daughter, Laura Manzanares García, were severely wounded when a bomb exploded under the van in which they were travelling.
Some of the victim’s neighbours told police that he was involved in drug trafficking, but his family denied the charges.
