Thirteen years after the 2004 Madrid bomb attacks, Spain was again targeted by jihadist terrorists. At around 5 pm on 17 August 2017, Younes Abouyaaqoub drove a van down the Paseo de las Ramblas in Barcelona, hitting large numbers of people in the central pedestrian area of the street, from the Plaza de Cataluña to the “Pavimento Miró”. Fifteen people were killed in the attack —including two children aged 3 and 7— and another 131 were injured. The Jihadist terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack through its news agency, Amaq.

A few hours after the Barcelona attack, at 1.15 a.m. on 18 August, another terrorist attack took place in the coastal town of Cambrils, in the province of Tarragona. On this occasion, a car with five members of the same jihadist cell mowed down people on a pedestrian promenade. Six people were wounded. Ana María Suárez was the only person killed. In the early hours of 18 August, 2017, she was in Cambrils celebrating the birthday of her husband, Roque Oriol, which had been on 16 August. Ana’s sister, Alicia Suárez, was with them. Ana María’s husband and sister were both seriously injured and were admitted to the Intensive Care Units of two different hospitals in the province of Tarragona, but managed to survive.
