On the day he was killed, Ramón Coto Abad went to a tobacconist’s shop that also sold lottery tickets on Calle Navarra in Bilbao. Ramón, who was retired, was a friend of the owners and used to run errands in exchange for some money.
Around 1:30 pm on 29 September 1980, several members of ETA’s Orbaiceta Group went to the tobacconist’s shop to kill Ramon Coto, whom they accused of being a member of the far-right paramilitary organisation Guerrilleros de Cristo Rey (Warriors of Christ the King). While one of them stood guard at the door, the other opened fire. Ramón was sitting on a stool behind the counter, talking to the owner and another employee and was hit several times. One of the bullets entered through his left armpit and exited through his lumbar region. Coto died of his injuries on 2 October.
