On the morning of 29 July 1979, the political-military faction of the terrorist organisation ETA sowed panic among the population of Madrid with a series of attacks at Barajas Airport and Chamartín and Atocha rail stations, killing seven people and wounding nearly a hundred others.
The first explosion occurred at 1.01 pm at the Barajas domestic flight terminal. The terrorists had left a bomb containing six kilos of ammonite in a suitcase in the left luggage area. The explosion sparked panic among travellers waiting in nearby seats, amongst them the members of a diving team from Tenerife who were about to take the flight home. One of them, José Manuel Amaya Pérez (32) was killed, and several of his colleagues were seriously injured. The victim’s family only learned of his death, when a television presenter listed José Manuel Amaya among those killed in the attacks.
