Description

Members of the so-called Barcelona Unit of ETA planted a car bomb in the vicinity of the Belchite National Police barracks in the Plaza de España. The device fitted to the car consisted of twenty-five kilograms of explosives and nuts and bolts and had a timer which was set to go off at 10:30 pm. The vehicle had been stolen from a car park in Guipúzcoa in July of the same year. As a result of the explosion, National Police officer Ángel González del Pozo, who was guarding the site, was killed instantly.

The victim, aged twenty-eight, was originally from Seville.. He had been posted to the Tenth Company of the General Reserve in Barcelona. He was the first person to be killed by ETA in Catalonia following the restoration of democracy in Spain. His remains were buried in the cemetery in the town of Huévar dl Aljarafe, Seville, where most of his family were from.
