Description
Army Lieutenant Colonel José Luis Prieto Gracia had retired from his position as the head of the Navarre Regional Police Force two years earlier after thirteen years’ service. He had previously been in the army, and had to move to different cities several times, taking his wife and seven children with him. He generally went to mass each day with his wife in the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Huerto. On 21 March 1981, at about 8:00 pm, they were just a few metres from the church, when two ETA terrorists approached and both shot José Luis Prieto in the head from a distance of about one and a half meters. He collapsed on the pavement.
