José Humberto Fouz

Description

On the evening of 24 March 1973, José Humberto Fouz Escobero, Fernando Quiroga Veiga and Jorge Juan García Carneiro crossed the border between Spain and France to see Last Tango in Paris in the French town of Biarritz. On leaving the cinema, the three friends went to have a drink at a bar on the outskirts of St-Jean-de-Luz, where some ETA terrorists mistook them for members of the police and decided to kidnap them. According to available evidence, they were later tortured and killed. Their bodies were never found.

Humberto Fouz (29) had come to Irún (Guipúzcoa) from Galicia in spring 1970 to work as an interpreter and translator in a transport firm. He spoke five languages and was studying Italian and Russian. He soon persuaded his friends Fernando Quiroga and Jorge García to move to the Basque Country as well. At the time of their deaths, the three were living at the home of Fouz’s sister and brother-in-law.
