On the morning of 8 May 2000, a GRAPO unit consisting of three men and a woman lay in wait for a Prosegur armoured security van on the provincial road to Vigo. They had planted an explosive device on the street and another two in a car and a container.
Around 7.45 am, after three simultaneous explosions, the vehicle came to a halt and the terrorists threw a petrol bomb at it to force the occupants out. Shooting commenced. The driver of the van, Gonzalo Torres Lage, and Jesús Otero Sobral were killed. A third employee and three pedestrians, amongst them a 15-year old boy, were injured. The terrorists made off without the money.
Gonzalo Torres Lage, who was married with two children, was driving the armoured vehicle. The security guard was shot through the head and died instantly.
