At around 3 pm on 11 December 1995, the terrorist organisation ETA set off a car bomb containing fifty kilograms of explosives just as a Navy van was crossing the Vallecas Bridge. Six civilian workers from the Navy’s automobile fleet were killed in the blast as they were returning home after completing their day’s work. They were Manuel Carrasco Almansa, Santiago Esteban Junquer, José Ramón Intriago Esteban, Florentino López del Castillo, Félix Ramos Bailón and Martín Rosa Valera. Another 17 other people were wounded in the explosion, five seriously, and the blast caused major damage, including to a school bus which had just dropped thirty children off at a nearby school. It was one of the deadliest attacks in ETA’s history.

Florentino López del Castillo, aged 55, from the Aravaca district of Madrid was married with seven children. He was a driver/mechanic in the Navy and was at the wheel of the van. He was buried in the cemetery of Aravaca.
