Description
Corporal Federico Carro Jiménez and Civil Guard Manuel Ávila García were on undercover patrol duty in an unmarked official vehicle. At a few minutes before half past ten in the evening, they went to inspect a suspicious red Ford Fiesta car. As they were about to examine the vehicle, a bomb in the interior was detonated remotely by Juan Carlos Balerdi, a member of the Éibar group of ETA. Civil guard Manuel Avila was killed instantly and Corporal Federico Carro died shortly afterwards, while he was being transferred to Basurto hospital.
