On 1 July 1985, at a few minutes past noon, Madrid’s Gran Via, was —as usual— packed. The British Airways offices was at Number 68, on the corner of Calle García Molinas, just below the offices of the American Trans World Airlines (TWA). Suddenly, the British Airways offices were rocked by a major explosion. Esther Grijalba Gómez was going to buy plane tickets for herself and her sister, Leonor. She was killed instantly in the blast. Leonor Grijalba, who was the staff manager at the Plaza Hotel, where the two sisters lived, was injured. Just five minutes later, the terrorists raked the offices of Royal Jordanian Airlines at Plaza de España with machine gun fire, and threw a grenade inside, which was later disposed of by the police in a controlled explosion. Altogether, 26 people were wounded.
