Description

On the morning of 29 July 1979, the political-military faction of the terrorist organisation ETA sowed panic among the population of Madrid with a series of attacks at Barajas Airport and Chamartín and Atocha rail stations, killing seven people and wounding nearly a hundred others.

At around 1.10 pm, barely ten minutes after the first bomb exploded at Barajas Airport, a second bomb went off at Chamartín rail station. A device hidden in a suitcase containing six kilograms of ammonite exploded in one of the luggage lockers next to the passenger waiting room. Two students were killed in the explosion: Dorothy Fertig, aged 20, a Danish citizen, and José Manuel Juan Boix. A Moroccan tourist who witnessed the attack later described the scene: “I heard a tremendous noise; I fell to the ground and saw next to me the severed head of a young woman”.
