Description

On the morning of 29 July 1979, the political-military faction of the terrorist organisation ETA sowed panic among the population of Madrid with a series of attacks at Barajas Airport and Chamartín and Atocha rail stations, killing seven people and wounding nearly a hundred others.

At 1.15 pm, barely fifteen minutes after the first bomb exploded in Barajas, and five minutes after the second explosion in Chamartín, a third bomb went off in a suitcase in the left luggage office at Atocha station. As a result, four people were killed and another forty were wounded. Amongst the victims was Dionisio Gonzalo Rey Amez, a retired National Police officer who was originally from León. He was seriously injured in the attack and died four days later. At the time of the explosion he was with his wife, Guadalupe Redondo Vian, who was killed instantly, and his daughter, Carmen Rey Redondo, who was seriously injured but survived.
