On the morning of 12 June 1985, Juan García Jiménez, official driver to Army Colonel Vicente Romero González-Calatayud, was double-parked outside the officer’s home on Calle General Oraá, waiting for him to emerge. As the colonel was walking towards the vehicle, ETA member José Ignacio de Juana Chaos appeared and shot him three times, killing him. He then turned around and shot the driver seven times, also killing him.
De Juana Chaos managed to escape with two other ETA members of the Madrid Unit in a car that they later abandoned in the car park of El Corte Inglés on Calle Goya with a bomb inside. The explosion killed Esteban del Amo, one of the bomb disposal experts who was trying to defuse it.
