Around 9:00 pm on 31 October 1982, a police convoy consisting of an armoured car and two vans was on its way to an Iberduero electrical substation in the Arana district of Vitoria. When it reached a junction on the outskirts of Vitoria, the terrorists detonated a powerful device made up of about ten kilos of Goma-2 explosives planted inside a Chrysler 180 car.
Officer Francisco Gonzalez was killed in the blast. Sergeant José Miñano was seriously injured and ten other officers suffered minor injuries: Emilio Herrera Romero, Manuel Pazos Jus, José Ocaña Sánchez, Juan Pastor Morales, Ventura Enebral Sánchez, Adolfo Cánovas López, Miguel Fernando Lozano, Antonio Gutiérrez Díaz, José Manuel Calvo Vega and Florencio Romero Pérez. A pregnant woman who was in her home at the time was also injured.
