Il avait l\u2019habitude d\u2019appeler sa femme tous les jours \u00e0 10 heures ; ce jour-l\u00e0 il ne le fit pas, ce qui d\u00e9clencha l\u2019alarme. Sa voiture fut retrouv\u00e9e \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 du b\u00e2timent militaire avec un pistolet \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur. On retrouva des cl\u00e9s dans le garage o\u00f9 la voiture \u00e9tait gar\u00e9e, on supposa donc que c\u2019\u00e9tait l\u00e0 que l\u2019enl\u00e8vement avait eu lieu.<\/p>\n<p>Six jours apr\u00e8s l\u2019enl\u00e8vement, l\u2019ETA revendiqua la responsabilit\u00e9 de l\u2019enl\u00e8vement et exigea la suspension du proc\u00e8s contre les membres du groupe terroriste arr\u00eat\u00e9s pour l\u2019attaque de la caserne catalane de Berga deux ans plus t\u00f4t. Dans le laps de temps qui s\u2019\u00e9tait \u00e9coul\u00e9 entre l\u2019enl\u00e8vement et l\u2019assassinat, les terroristes avaient \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 en lutte contre les m\u00e9dias et contre TVE, la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision publique espagnole en particulier ; ils exigeaient que leurs communiqu\u00e9s de propagande radicale soient lus dans leur int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 alors qu\u2019au m\u00eame moment la famille du militaire demandait avec angoisse dans les m\u00eames m\u00e9dias que le militaire soit lib\u00e9r\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Le 13 octobre, le groupe terroriste accorda un d\u00e9lai de 36 heures pour que le texte soit lu dans les journaux t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9s de 15 heures et de 20h30. Cet ultimatum \u00e9tait accompagn\u00e9 de deux photos de l\u2019otage sur lesquelles Mart\u00edn Barrios apparaissait avec une barbe de plusieurs jours devant une ikurri\u00f1a et des affiches et autocollants du groupe terroriste. Face \u00e0 cette pression, TVE diffusa une partie du document le 13, conditionnant sa diffusion int\u00e9grale \u00e0 la lib\u00e9ration du capitaine.<\/p>\n<p>Le corps sans vie du capitaine, b\u00e2illonn\u00e9 et avec une balle \u00e0 la tempe droite, fut retrouv\u00e9 dans une zone bois\u00e9e pr\u00e8s de Bilbao.
