Jos\u00e9 Manuel died shortly before two o&#8217;clock in the morning at the Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Ar\u00e1nzazu Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The gastronomic society where he was killed, La Uni\u00f3n Artesana, was about 200 metres from the Gaztelupe gastronomic society where former footballer and businessman Jos\u00e9 Antonio Santamar\u00eda Vaqueriza was killed in a very similar attack in the early morning of 20 January 1993: Santamar\u00eda was also killed by Valent\u00edn Lasarte, who shot him in the back of the head while he was dining with friends in the society to celebrate the San Sebasti\u00e1n Drum Tattoo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Olarte and Jos\u00e9 Antonio Santamar\u00eda had both been identified in a report by the Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office of San Sebasti\u00e1n Provincial Court as being key figures in alleged smuggling and drug trafficking rings in Guip\u00fazcoa. This was the reason given by ETA for assassinating Olarte.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer for the two men, Fernando M\u00fagica Herzog, was also murdered by ETA in 1996. Valent\u00edn Lasarte took part in all three murders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Olarte was therefore killed because of allegations made in newspapers and books.
