The vehicle, with a civilian driver at the wheel, was taking six senior army officers to the headquarters of the Joint General Staff and the Higher Centre for National Defence Studies, both on Calle Vitruvius. The van took the full impact of the blast and was enveloped in flames. Seven of its occupants were killed:\u00a0Lieutenant-Colonel Javier Bar\u00f3 D\u00edaz de Figueroa of the army; Lieutenant-Colonel Jos\u00e9 Alberto Carretero Sogel of the air force; Staff Sergeant Jos\u00e9 Manuel Calvo Alonso of the navy; Lieutenant-Colonel Fidel D\u00e1vila Garijo of the army; Commander Domingo Olivo Esparzay of the navy; Pedro Robles L\u00f3pez, a civilian working for the Ministry of Defence who was driving the vehicle; and Lieutenant-Colonel Juan Romero \u00c1lvarez of the Air Force. A further forty people were seriously wounded, including three children.<\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant-Colonel Jos\u00e9 Alberto Carretero Sogel was 43 years old and married with two daughters. Three days before he was killed by the terrorist organisation ETA, he had been awarded the Grand Cross of San Hermenegildo for 25\u00a0years&#8217; active service.
