Description

On 14 September 1975, Juan Ruiz Muñoz was walking home down Via Favencia in Barcelona after completing duty, when two members of the Anti-Fascist and Patriotic Revolutionary Front shot him twice in the back. Juan Ruiz Muñoz was in the habit of buying his daughter churros and crisps on his way home from work. According to eye-witness reports in La Vanguardia, the terrorists spent half an hour lurking at the scene, suggesting that they were familiar with the officer’s movements.

It was 2.30 pm when Adolfina Fernández heard the explosion. She immediately looked out the window of their home, a third-floor apartment in the Virgin del Rosario Complex, and saw her husband lying on the ground. Antonio Pose Rodríguez, a Civil Guard Lieutenant, had been on his way home after completing his day’s work in the Traffic Division. After he had parked and got out of his car, several young individuals approached him and opened fire on him with a shotgun in front of a twelve-year-old boy. The officer was left lying bleeding on the ground, while his assailants got away through an underpass, tossing propaganda leaflets from the FRAP (Revolutionary Anti-Fascist Patriotic Front) behind them as they went. Antonio Pose was taken to the Gómez Ulla Military Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Armed Police officer Lucio Rodriguez was on guard duty in front of the Iberia offices at No. 14 Calle Alenza. He was due to finish work at 10 pm, but the other officer who was due to take over from him was already twenty minutes late. Just then, a Seat 127 carrying three members of the FRAP parked on the street. Two individuals got out of the car and opened fire on the officer, hitting him up to eight times in the head, neck, shoulder, arm and abdomen. As the terrorists were getting away, Lucio Rodríguez managed to walk to Calle Cristóbal Bordiú, where he finally collapsed. He died at the Red Cross’s Central Hospital. The police officer, who was 23 years old, had been born in the town of Villaluenga (Toledo) and was planning to marry his fiancée in September.

On the occasion of the 1st May celebrations, the Communist Party, the trade union Comisiones Obreras, the FRAP (Patriotic Revolutionary Anti-Fascist Front) and other clandestine organizations called for demonstrations to be held in various parts of Madrid. One of the protests took place in the vicinity of Plaza Antón Martin at around 8 pm. Close to Calle Doctor Mata, a number of demonstrators ambushed officers from the General Police Force deployed in the area. They began by attracting the officers’ attention by waving red flags and shouting subversive slogans; then, just as the police were preparing to break up the group, the demonstrators fled, leaving what they called a “defence picket”, whose members were usually armed. One of them stabbed Inspector Juan Antonio Fernández Gutiérrez in the side. He took refuge in a nearby doorway. “I’ve been hit. I’m choking,” he said to a fellow officer. Juan Antonio Fernández died shortly after admission to the Francisco Franco Hospital Complex. He had a stab wound in the left hemithorax, at the level of the heart, with severe muscle tearing. Another two officers were seriously injured. Some days later, FRAP claimed responsibility for the attack.
